MLM acronym of the term multilevel marketing also known as network marketing is a hierarchical structure depicting a marketing strategy used by many companies worldwide. It is a strategy that creates a down line consisting of the distributors and so forming a hierarchical structure of compensation that compensates the promoters of any product of the company not just for the personal sales that they have achieved but for the sales of those promoters also whom they introduced to the company, thus forming a multilevel structure.

In multilevel marketing the company who manufactures the products is represented by the sales persons who are independent and unsalaried, these sales people represent the company in front of the customers and are referred to as distributors, the distributors are paid on the basis of the products they sell means they are on commission basis having a part of the sales they make. A distributor can work independently or can create a down line of his sales persons and would benefit from the sales he makes and also from the sales of his down line. The distributors make profit by purchasing the products at whole sale price and selling them at retail price more than the former. This is quite similar to the franchise system. You can also build an organization of distributors and it helps a lot if you a have fixed group of customers or have distributors in your down line that have regular customers. The sales people hired are not trained by the company instead have to be self trained to be competent.

Compensation to each distributor has to be paid depending upon the plan the company follows which may be a single level one in which you can have as many number of distributors on the first level but the number of levels is restricted to 5 or 6. Stair step breakaway plan depends on the maximum sales volume. A binary plan is very common in this you can have just two distributors at a level and like this every distributor can only have 2 down lines and both must be balance and thus depending on this the compensation is paid.

MLM has been criticized for its franchise approach as making distributors becomes a business itself and not the actual sales of the products to other customers are practiced.
